Honley CE (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School

Science Curriculum Maps

Science

We believe that Science can inspire the pupils of Honley School with a fascination about all its aspects, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which will deepen their understanding and spark their continued questioning and curiosity to answer the questions ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’. Making connections between science and other subject areas means children can benefit from a broader yet more connected learning experience.

Our intention is that when children leave Honley CE (VC) Junior, Infant and Nursery School, they will do so with:

• The ability to think independently and raise questions about working scientifically and understand the knowledge and skills that questioning brings

• Confidence and competence in the full range of practical skills, taking the initiative in, for example, planning and carrying out scientific investigations

• Excellent scientific knowledge and understanding which is demonstrated in written and verbal explanations, solving challenging problems and reporting scientific findings

• High levels of originality, imagination or innovation in the application of skills

• The ability to undertake practical work in a variety of contexts, including fieldwork

• A passion for science and its application in past, present and future technologies

Across all year groups, pupils should gain the knowledge and skills within each area of science through a predominantly ‘working scientifically’ approach

Home Learning - Science

Science is all around us both at school and home, just taking a walk and discussing the natural world is home learning related to science, looking after pets and gardening are all great ways to enjoy science at home.

If you wanted to try some home experiments the internet has many suggestions.

Here's a good website to start looking for home experiments: https://www.sciencekids.co.nz/experiments.html
