Physical Education

At Honley Junior Infant and Nursery school “Being Active”, one of the Five Ways to Wellbeing” is one of our Key Drivers and we try to embed this every day in to school life. Our intent is to provide a safe and supportive environment for children to be active by offering a range of physical opportunities to engage, inspire and improve physical and mental wellbeing. We see physical education as an opportunity to teach children transferable skills that help them prepare for many areas of their future lives.

Our focus in all year groups but especially for our younger children in Early Years and KS1 is on building physical literacy focusing on fundamental movement skills. We want all our children to have the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to be able to take part in physical activities for life.

At Honley we offer a dynamic and stimulating program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically through a varied, considered, and inclusive PE curriculum. Our hope is that all children can find a sport or activity in which they find physical enjoyment and expression that will inspire them to a lifelong love of being active.

PE and sport allow us a unique opportunity to really embed our school values. Our teaching of PE allows our children to learn to take on feedback, learn from mistakes, adapt their practice and take the initiative. We help them to accept outcomes in a mature manner, take on the role of coach and mentor and experience success and failure with dignity.

Our intent is to provide all our children with the opportunity for competition at a level that suits them, recognising the many benefits that this can provide; experiencing success and failure and the positive effects of this for self-esteem and resilience. We aim to provide intra competitions for each year group, local competition with schools in our pyramid inclusive sporting opportunities and also, for those high achievers, the chance to compete at regional and county level.

Our year 5 children take part in weekly swimming lessons. Our aim is for all children to be able to swim at least 25m by the end of year 6 and understand the hazards presented by water and how to keep themselves safe.

There are many local sports clubs that you may like to get involved with, here is a useful website to look through the local clubs in our area:

However to stay active you don't need to join a club

Some fun activities for the family that don’t feel like exercise include:

  • flying a kite in the park or at the beach
  • dancing to your favourite music
  • riding bicycles, where possible, using bike paths
  • playing a family game of table tennis
  • swimming and splashing about at the local pool
  • walking the dog
  • throwing a frisbee
  • rollerskating, rollerblading or skateboarding (insist that everyone wears appropriate safety equipment)
  • jumping on a trampoline.
  •

The NHS also has a useful list of activities on their website.
